Recreation
Leisure and learning onsite
Once good living conditions are ensured, the next step is to create fun and recreation. The labour sites have a recreation centre called Anand Bhavan which is space for activities beyond just the daily routine and the burden of work. Such a space makes living together in the labour community easy; especially since they come from different states and very different lifestyles. It is also way for the workers to express themselves creatively, to make connections, break stereotypes and be their true selves. A space like Anand Bhavan lets them know that they are so much more than just workers building homes for others. An initiative that humanises the culture of construction and community.

SPORTS
If you're heading to any of the sites on the weekend, watch out for a ball coming your way because cricket here is in full swing!
ROHAN sites truly come alive on the weekends with men and women playing sports alike, encouraging each other. Who doesn't love a good match of cricket after all? Other popular choices include kabaddi, lagori, kho-kho and an occasional game of throwball. They pick their own teams, build strategies and lay the rules- a little bit of healthy competition! You might also find some background music, played by our workers themselves- thanks to the musical instruments placed at the site which are free for everyone to use
EVENTS
At ROHAN sites, you are always in for a lively time because something or the other is always cooking, sometimes even literally! Read below some events we organised keeping the workers and their well being and joy in mind.
Eating together, staying together.
Food is more than survival. Sharing of food has always been part of the human story. With the objective of sharing of regional and state food culture, Meljol organised a cooking competition at Rohan Abilasha. The idea was that making food close to your heart will bring together the culturally, linguistically, regionally diverse population together. Our social norm associates cooking with women, but at construction sites men cook regularly. Though at the face of it, it may seem to be a culinary event, but it has broken many barriers and stereotypes. More than a hundred workers, contractors, volunteers from ROHAN took part in this event enthusiastically, making and tasting dishes ranging from the Litti Chokha from Bihar to the Maharasthrian special Puran poli and everything in between!
Movie Screenings
With everyone huddled in front of a screen, it is impossible not to be thrilled, it's movie night at the Rohan site! Showing hit films like Lagaan and movies with a message like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, these screenings are very well received. Head over to the nearest Rohan site for the next show.
Workshops and sessions
This is Jyoti. While Jyoti spends most of her weekdays teaching kids, her weekends are for herself and her friends from the camp. All of them go to Anand Bhavan to learn a new sport and also to learn a new art every weekend. This weekend, Jyoti and her friends are taking part in a Warli painting workshop conducted by Meljol.
The Invisible Ones Marathon
The atmosphere is electric, there is excitement in the air. People are cheering from the sidelines, you can see smiling faces everywhere as eager feet take off at full speed at the flag-off. It’s a morning dedicated to celebrating those who are invisible to us. It’s a morning to unlock a superpower: one that allows us to acknowledge and appreciate and see the invisible! What’s happening here? Our construction site workers are running a marathon!
As our construction site workers ran the marathon, we all took a step forward by giving them their due recognition and seeing them as individuals outside the context of their work. The residents of the homes they built cheer for them, and help them during their marathon which breaks typical role barriers and is a step in making the invisible ones visible. The website you are currently viewing was launched at the event .
LEARNING
According to the need of the population, different sessions are organised for the workers. Their personal growth and alignment with the outside world is just as important as their well being inside the site.
So far, we have had a session on sanitation and hygiene since that is necessary for the workers. For their own growth and alignment with the outside world, sessions on e-commerce and ATM use were conducted using a dummy ATM machine. In light of the pandemic, sessions on vaccine awareness and covid protocols also became a must and were conducted for every worker in the community. We keep trying to think of more educational sessions for the workers where they can grow and think beyond their everyday routines.
Building and Other Construction Workers Act (BOCW) gives a lot of benefits to the labourers in their life cycle. It regulates the employment conditions of construction workers. It’s been brought into action to ensure the welfare of the workers and to provide them a healthy work environment both physically and mentally. Unfortunately, many construction workers don't even know about it. Getting registered as part of the act requires a lot of documents which they often don't have. We are facilitating both, creating awareness about the act and providing training that empowers them along with getting them registered.
MY RIGHT, MY BOCW
